Big Band Analysis Class # 1 Now Open!

One of the best ways to learn is from making mistakes – but learning from mistakes doesn’t mean that they be YOUR mistakes!

Now You Can Learn Big Band Arranging Principles and Techniques Through an Analysis of Class Member’s (and Instructor’s) Arrangement

And as a special bonus – you will get TWO big band charts, each arranged and revised by both class member and instructor.

When I was a Master’s Student, I had an arranging class whereby all students brought copies of their scores to follow along as the musicians performed their arrangements.  Yep, every week we got our charts played in class – and we were able to view everyone’s score as the professor ripped them apart.

At times it was a very humbling experience, mainly because the professor lacked any tact whatsoever.

But it was by far the best arranging classes I ever had in school, bar none.   That experience actually accelerated my arranging skills because I was able to learn directly from other class member mistakes – in real time as the music was being performed.

If you would like to hone your big band arranging skills, consider being a part of the Big Band Analysis #1 class, beginning on October 1st.

Thanks for the heads up for your new on line arranging course. I be very interested in taking part in a course on arranging for smaller big band specifically in my case an octet with 5 horns or so. Perhaps you might find interest for that from others as well.

Was waiting for this for a long time, and now it is here!
Of course, just at a moment with lots of compromises, but there will be some sort of “priority re-arranging”!

This is what I wanted, and I’m happy “to get in trouble”!!!

    Thank you, Jim!

Hello! I’m interested in this class. It seems beneficial from a materials presented standpoint, but may I ask how does the student participation work? Is it just questions we may ask through the comments section like this one? Or will there be live chats and such? Thanks for your help and thanks for taking the time to do this.

  4. Jim Martin

Alvin, I’m working on getting a suitable “live chat” or at least a good commenting solution on the page. I can’t be on the page 24/7 but any questions or comments asked inside the class will be answered by myself or perhaps another class member.

  5. Jim Martin

Ok, I’ve got a nice chat box installed on the Analysis class content page. Any questions or comments can be answered in real time, or answered later. Its basically a combination comment box and chat box.

Hello Jim, I know I had, thinking I did, registered and I had a password. My hard drive blew out and know I have to replace it. Forgot my password and all, but if I have to pay the registration fee, which won’t be until October, I hope I can still get into your class.

    Thank you,

  7. Jim Martin

Mike, you should have been taken to a link where you can either log in with your normal user name/password, or you can create a new account. As soon as you log in the system will confirm its you and you will see the class content page in the left sidebar.

  8. Jim Martin

Kenneth, even though the class is meant to be in “real-time”, you will be able to jump in even after the class is over. Obviously there won’t be any more classroom participation, but all of the content will still be there after the fact and will still be a good learning experience.

  9. Jim Martin

John, you should be all set. Log in and you should see the analysis content page in the upper left menu. Let me know if you have any trouble.
