Big Band Arranging Competition @ 2013 Detroit Jazz Fest

I just stumbled across a competition calling for big band arrangers to arrange a chart based on Dave Brubeck’s music. The competition is part of the 2013 Detroit jazz festival, and pays out $1000, including a performance at the 2013 Detroit Jazz Festival. You must be 35 or younger to submit a chart.

A panel of judges including Chris Brubeck (son of Dave Brubeck), Chris Collins (DJF Artistic Director), and Detroit Professional Arrangers will select finalists based on: Artistic excellence; creativity; technique; integration of soloists, improvisational elements, and ensemble elements; originality; and stylistic continuity.

Grand Prize: Winner will be awarded $1000; their winning arrangement will be performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival by Detroit All-Star Big Band.

Runners-Up: Two finalists will be awarded $500 each; recognition on our website and from the stage at the Detroit Jazz Festival.

Applications must be submitted along with original score here, or burn a PDF of your score onto CD-R and mail to Detroit Jazz Festival, Attn. Arranging Competition, 19900 Harper Avenue, Harper Woods, MI 48225. All applications must be received by July 1, 2013.

That’s fantastic what a good idea. Dave Brubeck good choice for the Jazz Festival. Alot of good tunes to choose from.

Yea, its a great idea for sure, but alot of us are not happy with the 35 year old cut off! I can understand the logic, but there are alot of bad arrangers that are over 35, just like there are alot of great arrangers 35 and under.

Wow, just Brubreck’s music! It’s super interesting!
Unfortunately the contest is restricted to 35 or under. Why couldn’t it be for twice as that or over? (I’m 74!)

    Good luck!

Cool idea! Sad for me about the age limit. I already have two internationally published charts on Dave’s great music with Belwin Jazz – Blue Rondo ala Turk and Crescent City Stomp! Please check ’em out! god Bless!
