Richard De Rosa: The Art of Jazz Arranging

I don’t know much about Richard DeRosa, and have never met him, but I have heard a few of his charts played by the Mel Lewis band back when Brookmeyer was doing alot of writing for that band. The charts I am familiar with are absolutely fantastic. He can take a jazz standard and make it as fresh as ever. That’s the sign of a great arranger I feel.

I also did not know that he teaches at NTSU. If you are thinking about going into writing, I’ll bet Richard would be an awesome teacher.

Here is a terrific video that gives some of Richard’s insight into jazz arranging. This video features some excellent playing by the NTSU One O’clock band. Hope you enjoy it.
